Development Update: May 11th, 2020

String Tyrant Steam News

Our current projected release date for String Tyrant on Steam is May 21st, 2020. The 8th was just the day it went into the review queue -_-

It is currently awaiting review by a Valve employee. May 21st was the earliest day it would let me set the projected release date on the API, so that’s our projected release.

Coding Action

I spent some time this week struggling with the steam UI, but that’s all done. I’ve also been working on rebuilding chunks of the Adventure Mode UI to handle the new skills system. I’m currently building the jobs/skills UI and fixing other things as I go.

Artistic Action

Hund is getting us more of these area overlays to make navigation more intuitive. Chicken is doing her thing, and Urimas is getting me my precious icons.

Oh how I love icons.

Development Update: May 4th, 2020

Coding Action

This week, I’ve been slaving away reorganizing the combat for the big balance patch. Get used to that sentence.

So far I’ve rebuilt most of the baseline. The new code gives a much better control of event flow and better handling for exotic cases. This week I’ll be adding AI controllers and then rebuilding the UI interfaces which I had to rip out since all the combat code was redone.

Artistic Action

Chicken has finished updating a few more images, one of which the patrons get to see! Urimas is helping me with some more UI images. Stinkehund broke his glasses and just got the new frames, so he was blind for a week. What a silly Hund.

Steam Stuff

Our projected Steam release date for String Tyrant is this Friday, May 8th (unless something bad happens) and I will do a post when that happens. Leaving steam reviews is very helpful, so anyone who can is encouraged to.

The IndieGala bundle got moved back to May. Exact date is unknown, more when it develops.

Development Update: April 27th, 2020

Coding Stuff

A new version of String Tyrant and Pandemonium will be released tomorrow. Before you get excited, it’s just a bugfix patch, fixing a dylib path and a bug with the Electrosprite Adventure as reported by some people on the forums.

As for my coding activities, I have ripped out the combat engine and am rebuilding it. It’s all skeleton work right now, making sure characters have setup for the new job system and reorganized script handlers. It’s a lot of work and it won’t show dividends for a while yet.

Artistic Action

Chicken is still working her way through normalizing the images, having finished some of chapter 5’s TF sequences now. Hund has given me a new rollover text to be showed when the player changes areas, but then broke his glasses and cannot work until the new frames arrive. Silly Hund!

Urimas is getting me some more sprites for the various enemies. There will be a few more interactions with enemies in the Big Balance Patch. You’ll see.

Curious Cat

We have more of these fun in-character asks!

Development Update: April 20th, 2020

Coding Stuff

I’m currently working on an automated build system for the engine. I spent the last week doing some upgrades for the Big Balance Patch, including one of the new features: Mugging!

If you get behind an enemy and mash the Activate key, you can stun them for a few seconds. This steals 20% of their XP/Cash and any items they were holding and also breaks up their group if they were following another enemy on patrol. It can be used to isolate and pick off enemies.

This will not be in the next release (which is a Adventure Catch-Up Release bringing back OSX support for Chapter 5) but will be in the Big Balance Patch release, which will likely be in June. There may be more than one BBP release, depending on how much stuff I have to do, how much time it takes, and how many bugs there are (hint: Many)

The automated builder just allows me to quickly build releases of various games for various platforms. I will be releasing v1.03 of String Tyrant and Pandemonium Chapter 5 final later this week once I’ve got the builder done and configured.

Artistic Concerns

Stinkehund is working on some overlays that are used to show what area you’re currently in, making navigation a bit more intuitive.

Chickenwhite has done some concept work that I needed done, and Patrons get to see it this week! Otherwise, she’s still updating the art. Most of chapter 5 is updated now.

Urimas has finished the first round of sprites I need for a thing. I’m going to need more. More information on the thing later, much later. It’s for chapter 2, you’ll like it, I promise.

Development Update: April 13th 2020 MEGAPOST BUCKLE UP

What’s in this post?

Holy cow we have some updates for you today. Here’s what’s in store:
1. Team Status
2: String Tyrant v.102 Released
3: String Tyrant picked up by IndieGala / Steam Update
4: String Tyrant Stuff on HypnoHub!
5: Starlight Budget Report for April 2020
6: The Triumphant Return of the OSX Build!!!
7: Last Week’s Poll Results
8: Curious Cat Cuestions
9: Links and Crap

Team Status

Salty is coding and begins the Big Balance Patch right after the next Adventure Mode release (see section 4 below). Chicken is still working her way through the art update. Hund has completed setting up our Steam page for String Tyrant’s release. Urimas finished the dance thing I wanted him to do (more on that in a future post). Koops is currently busy petting her cats. MarioneTTe is too tired to do anything. Pyxxis is getting us footage for a trailer.

String Tyrant will be getting a crude trailer (Steam requires a trailer on its launch page) courtesy of longtime favourite contributor CocoMint. Thanks, Coco!

String Tyrant 1.02 Released

A changelog is below. Most importantly, this includes the Linux/OSX builds. You can get it wherever you got it the first time, links are updated. If you haven’t played it yet, see this page, or buy it on the itch.io page (a free demo is available!)

*Fixed Jessie not having dialogue when spoken to while in the main hall as you go to find Lauren.
*Fixed the map piece in the chapel showing the wrong area.
*Fixed several typos.
*Fixed storybooks not costing a turn to drop.
*Fixed incorrect door highlighting with mouseover for west/east doors in some rooms.
*Fullscreen, Dark Mode, and Large Text size options are now saved between playthroughs.
*You can now set doll type/color preference from the options menu after getting any game-over.
*Options are now split into their own configuration files.
*Added OSX/Linux ports.

String Tyrant has been picked up by IndieGala / Steam Stuff

In the next week or so, IndieGala will be issuing a bundle of indie games, and String Tyrant is included! I will do a post as soon as it’s live with a link, in case you were holding off for some reason.

The Steam version of the game will be available in early May. This is because Steam requires a minimum of 30 days after the sign-up fee is paid before the game goes live. We already have most of the page ready and I’ve shipped a build to Steam, we’re just waiting on that 30 days to time out.

Pandemonium will make it onto Steam sometime later, it needs to receive the Big Balance Patch and be cleaned of any possible copyrighted material (a deep scrub is necessary, it is not worth the risk!) before it can be put up.

String Tyrant stuff on HypnoHub!

For promotional purposes, I made a little sequence. You can find it on HypnoHub (very NSFW!!!). It’s an original bit of writing with images from the game, and it drove some traffic towards the game, which means sales, which means sequels!

If you want to make fan art of any Starlight Studios stuff, let us know because we love free promotion and will boost the hell out of it. Promotion means sales means sequels, people!

Starlight Studios Budget Report for April 2020

People sure do love those periodic budget reports we do!

Please note that String Tyrant’s sales are not included in the April report. I will do a retrospective sometime after the Steam release and things have calmed down.

Apple is BACK, BABY

That’s right, I got the OSX build working again. How? Well I found GLAD, a program which generates opengl header files. I didn’t even use it, instead I downloaded some generated headers to my mac to see if I could get them to work. But I lost them because OSX sometimes just downloads something to a location and doesn’t tell you where (yes, really). So I did a search.

And I found a lot of opengl headers. Turns out that when Apple removed the headers from the framework, it left a whole bunch of SDK backups on my hard drive. So now I have the original headers again!

String Tyrant has already been compiled for OSX and version 1.02 is available. Pandemonium will be getting an OSX build early this week (I have to make sure the shaders still work with some upgrades I made) so that Mac players can finally play it again! Hooray!

Public Feedback for String Tyrant

Didn’t fill out the poll? It will remain open in perpetuity. We will still take a look at it in the future before making decisions. These are the results as of today.

PublicPoll0

Please leave us a damn rating, it really helps the game’s visibility.
And: People like the game. Maybe it actually is a good game.

PublicPoll1

Pretty good cross section of recommendations from the general public. Still has a very obvious kink crowd, but that’s okay. Let’s work together to make kink games socially acceptable!

PublicPoll2

Seems the whole “free demo” thing is really effective. Any future Starlight Studios games will definitely have demos. Getting people to play your game is a good form of advertising, who would have thought?

PublicPoll3

So most people think 5$ is about right for a game of this size. Good to know. We could probably charge a bit more for a larger, deeper game.

PublicPoll4

The last-minute turn-based-combat upgrade turned out to be the right call, it’s receiving much better feedback than the action combat did. A possible sequel to String Tyrant will definitely be expanding upon the combat system, we already have a lot of great ideas.

PublicPoll5

It’s a fairly short game, so the fact that a lot of people finished it is not surprising. I expect the people who stopped at the ritual altar are the ones who are playing the demo, as that’s where the demo ends.

If any of you who did not complete the whole game are reading this: Why did you stop where you did? Do you intend to pick it back up? Email us!

PublicPoll6

(Google forms sucks and I had to edit this a bunch. Get used to that.)

So the big one is people want more monsters and TFs. Monsters, bad ends, TFs – yeah that’s the kind of game we make isn’t it? Luckily, that’s thing #1 a sequel or expansion would get.

PublicPoll7

More monsters, tfs, and bad ends! Okay! But, people also really want to see what happens next in the story (whether that is a thematic sequel, a crossover, or what? Well, that depends on how the game does).

PublicPoll8

The fourth crystal not appearing on the map is actually a bug and was fixed in v1.02, so hopefully that should help.

As for how to solve getting hit during an attack setup – that’s kind of the point. Strategize your moves and make sure you’ve got shields ready for the hit.

The scenario presented in the third statement is a little confused (by ‘them’ do you mean Jessie and Lauren?) but is an interesting idea to take into account for a sequel. I’m not adding more major content to String Tyrant immediately, but may do a small content patch in the future.

5$ Patrol Pal Poll

This one is exclusive for 5$ patrons, and has a lot more impact on what the team’s plans are for the future.

PatrolPoll0

Patrons are very receptive to a sequel if the game sells well! It’s doing pretty good so far. Our current goal is 2000$ to consider a sequel, with a budget of 6000$ (if we assume Salty would need to actually be paid this time). 10000$ in sales would guarantee a sequel.

PatrolPoll1

Damn. Moody and spooky wins, but not by enough that a more adventure-themed game is out of the question. We have ideas for both types of games, and given this result, a sequel would likely be a horror game.

PatrolPoll2

A dead goddamn split! That means its up to us what you get. People want a new story and new characters but a continuation and – you’ll get something good. Trust us. We make good games.

PatrolPoll3

Once again, a majority wants the current tile-based movement system, but it doesn’t win by enough to fully throw out an Adventure-Mode style of movement.

Making a sequel use Adventure Mode’s movement but String Tyrant’s combat is an idea I’ve been toying with. Still, a majority wants the current system so that’s very likely to be what happens.

PatrolPoll4

This is a pretty hard majority in favour of the card combat, though with some upgrades. Good, I really like how the card combat turned out and would love to expand it.

PatrolPoll5

This is an update of the previous one with some “Other” added so people can vote for Pandemonium’s monsters.

As before, dolls did well, as did rubber goop. People want more mind-control stuff like possessive masks and book hypnosis, and good ol’ corruption.

Golems come out in a lot of the Pandemonium votes, but not enough to warrant getting their own sequel. Maybe a one-off expansion with golems could be fun, something quick to make (and by quick I mean four months again -_-)

Development Update: April 6th, 2020

Version 1.01 of String Tyrant has been released

If you’re a 5$ patron, get it from the String Tyrant downloads page (a patreon notice will be posted after this). If you already bought it on itch.io, you can download the update from there.

If you played the game and liked it (or even if you hated it), please leave a rating on itch.io. It helps the game’s visibility when it gets more ratings. Do your part today!

In other news, I’ve been working on the patch for this last week. There are still a few minor issues in the game that will get patched soon, likely next week. I’ve also started work on Pandemonium’s Big Balance Patch (more details next week).

Here’s a feedback poll for everyone who played String Tyrant. Fill it out if you have time.

Artistic Endeavours

The artists are back to work on Pandemonium. Chicken is working her way through all the art to get it updated, while Urimas is working on some sprites. So you know, the usual.

String Tyrant Released (And Poll Results!)

Mary_Kitsune Full

(Bonus Art Courtesy of Goop-Sinpai, commissioned by Klaysee)

That’s right, String Tyrant is out! You can get it from this itch.io page, or by becoming a 5$ patron. See this (patron-restricted) post for details.

Wondering what String Tyrant is? Check this page.

So now that the game is out, we’re going to be having a team meeting. I still need to make a Steam API integration for the Steam release, and possibly fix bugs. After that’s done, I begin work on the Big Balance Patch.

Feedback Poll

What, did you forget about that? Yep, last week I asked patrons who played Prototype 5 what they thought. Here’s the results.

It should be noted that the new turn-based combat system was added after this poll was created, explicitly as a response to the feedback. Thanks for kicking me in the ass so I put it in.

There will be a 5$ patron poll… sometime after the next team meeting. There will also be a public feedback poll for the game. More updates as they happen.

Let’s get to the questions

Poll01

Obviously, a self-selected group of enthusiasts is going to rate the game highly. This is about as expected.

Poll02

This was a “Pick the most appropriate” answer. We still have a strong kink audience here, but at least a few people would say it’s appropriate for horror/everyone, so that’s good.

Poll03

Koops says “Thanks everyone!”. Urimas/Hund/Chicken/CocoMint could not be reached for comment.

Poll04

Because google forms kinda sucks, I have modified the image to make it a little easier to read. It still gets cut off the edges.
Hopefully the new turn-based combat gets better approval ratings. For those of you who liked the action-combat, it’s still there as a menu option.

Poll05

Generally positive response. I was surprised by how many people found it exciting, but maybe exciting is being used in… more than one sense.

Poll06

Seems we had quite a few converts from the not-doll-fans crowd. This is a pretty good hit-rate for a self-selected group.

Poll07

Very positive response when it comes to claygirls. Woo!

Poll08

I was actually expecting a very negative response to the petrification stuff, but we have a positive result set here. Petrification is usually a very different, not monster-ish sort of TF, but this heavy mind-control aspect seems to have stuck.

Poll09

A much more mixed response here, with a larger cluster of no-strong-feelings. I personally liked the writing on both, but maybe they just aren’t developed or interesting enough. Either way, lesson learned.

Poll10

Good job, Sinpai. People like them rubbers.

Poll11

This is about where I want it to be, though I was not particularly happy with the Strange House trap, and might rework it in the future. Still, the traps should be a little tricky but not brain-benders.

Poll12

(Tip to the first custom result response: The ‘Scissors’ items you find in the manor give you free mess-ups and can be sharpened after use)
I’m happy that the ‘change of pace’ aspect is what made an impression. Some of the new mechanics are going to be a little confusing, but not too many people got stuck it seems. I wanted to put in something other than combat and exploration, and the traps served that purpose.

Also they were a good excuse to shove in some more unique bad-ends.

Poll13

Speaking of, this is a generally good response. Unfortunately 27% didn’t feel strongly about any of them, but I hope there’s enough in the rest of the game to keep their interest.

In retrospect, I should have included a “I did not see any” option, which is likely what some of those who picked that option would have taken.

Poll14

Inky did a great job! I’m glad it didn’t conflict with the style too much. Unfortunately, we didn’t have the kind of budget needed to do the rest of the art for the Grand Archives in that style, but I think it’s great.

Poll15

A somewhat more mixed response, more people thought it conflicted with the style. Once again, for budget reasons (and others), we couldn’t get Koops to do it. So it’s either this or nothing, and I’m happy with how it turned out.

Poll16

As expected, most players got all the way through or fairly far along.

Poll17

As expected, big Kink component in the self-selected response group. Luckily, people enjoyed the other aspects of the game. I hope they enjoy the new combat to bring it up to standard.

Poll18

Pandemonium is and always will be free. Luckily, itch.io allows a “tip” option so you can pay more if you can afford it.

Poll19

So to help with this one: A mechanical sequel borrows the same mechanics (combat, exploration, TFs, hunting your friends) but has a new setting and characters, and often a new theme.

A thematic sequel aims to capture the same tone of the game. A thematic sequel might even be in a different engine, but would try to be atmospheric, oppressive, and mysterious.

A story sequel is a continuation of the same story, but may be of a different tone or use different mechanics.

A direct sequel is all three of the above: Same engine, same mechanics, same tone, continuation of the story.

And a crossover with Pandemonium might feature Talia helping Mary – or becoming one of her dolls…

Anyway, it seems that a crossover or thematic sequel are very popular. If the game does well, we might produce one next year.

Poll20

So the public likes dolls and rubbery goops (yay!) but possessive mask is very popular. Meanwhile, 1st place goes to “Start as a doll, battle to remain human”, which opens a lot of interesting ideas.

Please note that these are just suggestions if we decide to continue the series. But please enjoy the Mask-Possessed Kitsune Mary teaser above!

Poll21

This is a very large long-form response image. Some of these are already implemented in the final game, some I can put on my to-do list for a later patch. And some are good suggestions that might make their ways into a sequel.

I may do a more individual response to some of these at a later date. If you’d like to discuss it in detail, we now have a forum thread.

Almost done String Tyrant! I just finished upgrading the new title screen, adding a new loading screen, expanding the tutorial, and fixing a bunch of other things.

I have some more bugs to fix and a few nice-to-haves to get in, and I need the new Deck Editor UI. Then we’re… ready to launch.

I will be creating a free demo later this week that everyone gets to play. After that, it’s launch time. The itch.io page will be crossposted here, while the Steam page will take longer to make (the team needs to have a group bank account made and I need to call a meeting for that).

More String Tyrant News

(Wondering what the hell String Tyrant is? Look at this page.)

Lots of progress news this week! First, take a look at the new interface courtesy of CocoMint!

TutorialScreenshot0

Here you can also see that the game has a brief tutorial now. We also have a new Locality window with icons (Urimas is working on improving the icons right now) instead of simple text.

DeckEditor0

Next up, the Deck Editor. This allows you to modify your deck composition. The UI is currently a placeholder and is next on our upgrade list.
The little green question marks are help buttons that explain what the various parts do. Oh, and don’t forget the spiffy new card designs!

NewCombat0

And then we have the new combat UI, with new buttons, cards, and a sweet magical table aesthetic. You can also see your remaining cards in the bottom right to give you an idea of what your deck looks like.

All in all the game is looking pretty good. I hope to have Prototype 5 out later this week. There’s a checklist down there to show you how we’re doing.
