Development Update: December 9th, 2019

We now have a page with artist commission information

Some people (you know who you are) were asking if they can commission the artists who work on the game. Well now you can! Either follow that link, or look at the navigation pane in the upper right where it shall be enshrined forevermore.

I also made a page for String Tyrant

You can read about the upcoming survival-horror-also-has-dolls-and-girls-kissing game String Tyrant (former title: Doll Manor) over on this special page. The link is also in the nav pane.

Programming Update

I am currently working my way through Southern Cryogenics. The map patterns are laid out and glued together, and I am working on the examination text and map detail. It should be ready for testing tomorrow (probably).

I intend to also put in the Relive options and save point dialogues with 55 and SX-399 and then send it out to testers by Friday. If all goes well, the first content patch for chapter 5 will be next week.

Artistic Update

Koops and Hund have gotten me all the remaining art needed to complete String Tyrant, meaning that will probably get completed in January or February depending on how long the chapter 5 work takes.

Chicken is going through a bit of a rough time right now, so no updates on that front. Her current task is to redo the chapter 1 art that we lost in the shuffle, after which she will do a costume or two for chapter 5 and then renormalize the rest of the shading.

Other Concerns

It is December and that means The Holidays bear down upon us. Please take this into account in terms of our team’s productivity. Just because Salty works 7 days a week doesn’t mean he also doesn’t get vacations (just because he literally doesn’t)!

Curious Cat Time

Yes we still have a curious cat, and yes people actually do use it. You can use it too!

Oh no, it’s demographics time

The Demographics Poll

A little while ago, I asked you, the adoring people, to fill out a short demographics survey to help us get a better idea of our fanbase’s composition.

In fact you can still fill it out here. It will be available in perpetuity.

So let’s all go over the results so far and maybe learn something. Worst case scenario is us all walking away every bit as ignorant as when we started.

Also there will be some Curious Cat responses at the bottom of the post!

Question the First: Age Group

Demographics0

With advance apologies to our colorblind users…

Most of Pandemonium’s fans are young adults, but amazingly we actually have some older than 34. Didn’t expect that.

Question the Second: Gender

Demographics1

Most of our audience are cis males, but unsurprisingly we have a trans audience (gee I wonder if chapter 5 had anything to do with that?) and we also have the very rarely seen Extremely Unfunny gender, with 2 entries.

Losers

Jesus fucking christ, transphobes. Get a new joke, that one’s been in the fridge for too long.

Question the Third: Sexuality

Demographics2

Pairing with the fact that we are mostly dealing with men, a game starring lots of women should expect a large heterosexual audience. The bisexual and asexuals are about where I would expect, but we also have 6 Slimesexuals. Interesting. I’ll have to put in more slime content.

Question the Fourth: Dom, Sub, or Switch?

Demographics3

I don’t know what the general population actually is, but I’m not surprised that Switch is the big leader. We actually have more subs than doms – oh no, will our dom characters be as popular? What will I do if Crowbar-chan being a sub makes her more popular than Sanya, a dom? I am having an existential crisis about crowbar sexuality!

As for those of you asking questions about a survey question: This is the internet and you can google it.

Question the Fifth (and the most important): Boobs or Butts?

Demographics4

All is right with the world.

image0

(Thanks, Koops)

The other percentages were mostly people saying “both” which is a non-answer, but okay sure. There were a couple stating curves, thighs, and feet.

Cough so more boobie is on the way!

Question the Sixth: Social Anxiety

Demographics5

Yeah, a majority have social anxiety. In fact, I took this into account when coming up with the Curious Cat question (below), so that people can ask anonymous questions. Social anxiety is more common than you’d think. Stories about people with anxiety should be more common than they are, it needs to be said.

So, get excited for chapter 3 where Jeanne gets to struggle with social anxiety, even worse than 55 did!

Question the Seventh: Anonymous Question Forms

Demographics6

Gee I wonder if social anxiety has anything to do with that. Also 7 respondents were literally God, so if any of you actual gods could send some cash my way it’d help make the game faster.

Question the Eighth: Who is Your Favourite Character?

Demographics7

(The blank entry says “Nadia, Breanne, and Cassandra”. Thanks for sucking, Google.)

There were 111 responses and only one of them got the question correct: Goat.
That’s right, this isn’t a survey, it’s a quiz, assholes!

It’s actually not surprising that Mei took the lead since she won the popularity poll which is why she’s the lead of chapter 1. Christine, the other protagonist, has a strong showing, and the companion characters also did well. Crowbar-chan, as always, defies expectations and manages to do way better than she has any right to.

Question the Ninth: Favourite Monster Form

Demographics8

This one had a hell of a go. I checked in every other day to see how it was doing. Golem took an early lead, then lost to alraune, and at one point darkmatter was even in the lead. Things seem to have settled out with slime, bee, and latex drone in good leads.

Doll actually had no favourites for the first few days and has shot up to 28, presumably as people played the chapter. Raibie is where you’d think considering it’s there for all of 10 seconds, but it will show up more in later versions once I integrate using the super forms in combat.

Question the Tenth: Whither String Tyrant

Demographics9

A majority of respondents fall into “What the hell is that?” territory, meaning I should probably do another information post. A few are also waiting for it to be finished (soon!), but what I am most glad for is the fact that few people aren’t interested.

I will be putting up some information posts on the game soon, but for now: It’s a game about some teenagers getting trapped in a mansion filled with living doll girls. Their goal is to escape, and if they don’t… well, I work on transformation games, you figure it out.

We made the game over the course of about 3 months around the start of 2019, but artist complications prevented us from finishing it. We’re going to finish it near the start of 2020, and release it for 5$ on itch.io and other services. It will have a free demo so you can try it before you buy it.

5$ patrons also get to play the prototype, which is about 80% complete (has a few bugs but is story-complete. Needs some more CGs and another monster to be added).

And yes, testing it counts. Sheesh.

Question the Eleventh: Redbubble and Merch

Demographics10

The 8 responses there are “Yes, I desperately need a shower curtain”.
This was a joke answer because Stinkehund was making fun of the fact that they recently added shower curtains to RedBubble. Did you know it was a joke answer when you clicked it? Because we will totally put some shower curtain designs up, doesn’t cost us anything.

Ahem. Redbubble, for those who do not know, is a website (you can look it up…) that sells objects made with designs set by the artist. We send the designs, they make the stuff and send it to you. We get a cut if our designs are used.

I asked this to see what people wanted specifically. After the Sophie and Christine looking out at the city CG was made, a few people asked us for poster prints. And hey, there seems to be an audience for merch.

We’ll be figuring out what we can use of existing assets to put on the store, and will also probably make a few custom images just for merch once we’re caught up normalizing the art. Want stuff on the merch? Send requests to us via discord/email/forums/etc and we’ll see what we can do!

Obviously all proceeds go to funding the game, so if you don’t want merch just support us on Patreon like you already are (and we love you for it).

Question the Twelvfthfhfh: What can we do to gottagofast.mp4

Demographics11

What the fuck did google forms do to this question? By the way, both the 5 and 4 there are “yes”, but the 4 is lowercase yes and the 5 is uppercase Yes. Wow.

So, I had to copy it into a spreadsheet and read it all out one by one. There are about 15 saying “It’s slow, go faster”

image0-1

(Not depicted: Urimas, Mario, Pyxxis. Don’t worry, they’re dead offscreen. Please do not look too closely at Crowbar-chan because if you magic-eye it a bit it looks like both hooks are going the same direction I said stop looking.)

One response was just “Hucows!”

I read all the responses and will be reviewing them with the team, so don’t worry if I didn’t mention yours specifically. The results were generally positive.

Lucky Question 13: Favourites of Chapter 1

Demographics12

Gee, people came to the monstergirl game to see monstergirls. The 15 there is “combat and optional bosses”. One of the other responses is “The existence of the Other section in this poll” which is the most meta answer ever. Like how do I even respond to that?

Google forms really sucks at this, so another reply was people enjoying the Adina stuff, another was Mei’s characterization, and another was simply not remembering chapter 1 very well. I appreciate the honesty, actually.

As for not having enough strategic depth? Come back in a couple months after I’ve completely overhauled the entire combat system to make it fun and awesome.

(Someone replied that they like the game engine itself? Marry me.)

Question the Fourteenth: This is a long survey

Demographics13

The 23 there is “The non-linear first half”, the 16 is the “combat and optional bosses” response.

One response was disliking the overall tone of the chapter (fair answer) but the others were either positive or stating they hadn’t completed it. Well you can complete it now so get back to me when you have.

Question the Fifteen-th: How’d You Find Us

Demographics14

A pretty strong majority are the TFGS posting, with a couple on F95. Amazingly, one was a kindle response and 2 were from 4chan, where we haven’t even posted.

Question 16: Anything Else?

Note: I edited this since it’s too long for one screenshot. I also edited out one that seems like it was incriminating.

Demographics15.png

Yeah I just wrote the responses directly onto the images.

Whoever it is that really likes Hucows: Chapter 4. Since you really seem to like them maybe I should tide you over by having Koops draw one for you. Hucows!

So that’s our demographics survey. I hope you all learned a lot. I sure didn’t. Oh well, back to work.

Development Update: December 2nd, 2019 – Poll Results, Merch Update, And More!

Programming Update

Before we get to the good stuff: I did no programming last week. None.

I was expecting a lot more serious bug reports, but we got none that were so awful I would need to immediately patch the game. There were some which are… odd… and one that only seems to happen on Linux (???) which I will be working out ASAP, but this release was remarkably stable. Good work, bug testers who found the inventory crash.

This week, after I figure out the Linux crash bug I will be mapping. We’ve got a couple new areas to add to chapter 5 before it’s complete, and I have a bunch of other stuff to improve (fixing LRT problems, topics in the biolabs, redo the Raibies quest…)

Artistic Update

Chickenwhite is now working on renormalizing all the art to make all the characters look like they’re from the same damn game. Because some of the original files were lost, this involves redoing some of the older designs from scratch.

Mei Round 2

Stinkehund is getting us animations for attack types that weren’t in the base game enough to warrant them yet. Ice is done, fire is most of the way done.

Urimas is spriting and also working on his part-time modelling career.

Queen Bee Mei will be getting done sometime soon and added to the Manufactory patch.

Koops has completed and delivered almost all of the String Tyrant ending images. I will probably complete the Manufactory/Southern Cryogenics patch before I get to String Tyrant, but both will be completed soon.

Saltys Reviews a Bunch of Petrification Games

Since it’s the wind-down between major releases, I decided to review a bunch of Japanese indie games I found on twitter. These games all have petrification as a theme, because it turns out it’s quite a subculture.

These games are fairly short (with one exception) so the reviews are pretty in-depth and they all includes lots of screenshots. You can certainly do a lot worse than taking a look, and there’s some gems in there (haha rock jokes).

Salty Writes a Mod Guide

I am currently writing a guide on how to mod Pandemonium. This guide is both for public consumption and also for new writer-guy Pyxxis to serve as a useful reference.

You can find the guide here. It’s not done yet because it will never be done, but it presently allows you to make maps and edit the scripts to get them in the game.

Teepublic, Redbubble, Ko.fi, CuriousCat, and many more announcement

In response to the poll (which will be detailed tomorrow because it’s really long), several people asked for merchandise like posters and clothes. Artist Stinkehund has made us a Teepublic and Redbubble account, and we will be putting some designs on there for you to buy. We get a cut of the proceeds (which goes to the game’s development budget) and you get some sick merch.

I have assigned Chicken and Stinkehund to get the designs up. We have a few already ready (such as the poster of Christine and Sophie) and can also adapt the book covers into usable designs. I will post again when we have something up.

We’re also going to be getting Subscribestar and Ko.fi’s going by the end of the year. More on those later. Some people do not want to use Patreon (for good reason…) so having alternatives always helps.

We also now have a Curious Cat, a website where you can ask questions of us anonymously. We will answer them and can even post them automatically to our twitter. Several people indicated they would make use of this service if provided for various reasons (like shyness). You can find it here.

Demographics Poll Results are Tomorrow

Because the poll is actually huge and has a lot to unpack, I will give it its own post tomorrow. I cannot wait.

Prototype 5-5d now released to the public!

That’s right, 5-5d is now a public game you can download and play and enjoy.

The links are right here (Mediafire) (Mega.nz), or you can check the downloads page for a current version if you’re reading this from the future.

From this point on, chapter 5’s prototypes will all be public. There is still another content addition in the pipeline for chapter 5, as well as some bugfixes, but it is now story-complete and playable start to finish.

I’m a returning player and I lost my save! Help!

Very helpful person and bug enthusiast Aaaac has provided a collection of savefiles you can use to skip to certain spots. Click here to download them! (Mediafire) (Mega.nz)

Please fill out this demographics survey!

There will be a poll next week to figure out what everyone thinks of chapter 5, but for now, please fill out this general demographics survey. It’s been a while since we did the last one, and I’d like to know what sort of fanbase we have.

You don’t have to fill it out if you don’t want to. Results will be published at a later date.

Style Survey Results

Because I am a fool, I decided to create a poll last week asking which of three styles we should use for our art going forward. I am a fool because I used Patreon’s built-in polling system which is hostile to users who don’t have Patreon accounts.

Fortunately, I simply allowed people to also vote by just telling me their preference on the forums. There are a few extra votes but not enough to change the majority. They are, in order, +1, +2, +1.

Style Results

Comparison

The comparison image is provided for clarity.

Considering a fairly solid majority liked the more shadowed version, and a slimmer majority liked the colored lines, that’s the style we’ll be going with. Obviously, Art Director Chickenwhite has the final say, but she won’t have a problem with these results.

The only reason to change would be economical (it costs less time and therefore less money to use the black-lined versions) and I think the majority is large enough that the extra work is justified.

Other Considerations

If you filled out the survey above, you’ll notice a question about Redbubble. We’ve gotten some requests for merch recently, so I’ve dispatched Stinkehund to get us ready to have a simple merch store put together.

Want specific merch? Ask on the forums or via discord!

Next week I will go into our rough roadmap for development. For now, go play the new story content!

Development Update: November 18th, 2019

Prototype 5-5 becomes public next week

Rather than drop the prototype in the middle of the week, I will make it public on the Monday during the usual update time.

Programming Stuff

I have completed the credits and costume backend code and am now going to be clearing as many bugs as I can from the existing list.

Starting on December 1st, Pyxxis and I begin work on the areas that never get completed during the chapter 5 development cycle: Southern Cryogenics and The Manufactory. I expect these areas would take a month normally, but since that month is December, they will probably be completed in January due to Holiday-itis.

Artistic Stuff

Stinkehund is currently working on animations to use for all the damage types that aren’t in the game, like ice, shadow, light, terrify, and all that crap. The ice attack has been “completed” and needs coloring.

Chickenwhite is on vacation for a week because the new Pokemon came out and we all knew she wouldn’t be getting anything done, come on.

Koops is still working on Doll Manor’s ending CGs. Because she works a day job (like me!) I don’t have an expected ETA on those yet.

Urimas is currently doing sprites for all the costumes, and is halfway done the Queen Bee Mei sprites.

MarioneTTe, though a writer, cannot be described as an artist in any way.

Unity Edition?

Unity Edition has been getting a lot of improvements lately, and you should go check it out if you haven’t.

Whenever TL decides enough is enough, I will be adding alllllll the new forms and mechanics to Classic Mode. I will set aside 2-3 weeks just for that because there’s a lot, holy cow. I also need to redo the UI for Classic now just because so much stuff has been added.

Artistic Style Polling

In case you missed it, we’re doing a public feedback poll on the Patreon. Details on the patreon post.

While you must have a patreon account to vote in the poll, if you don’t particularly want to make one you can register your vote on the forums (link is below) or comment on this very blog post, and I will add it to the final tally. Go vote!

Artistic Style Polling!

Comparison

It has come to this, we are deciding on our finalized art style for the game. Why? Because Chicken is going to spend the next few months bringing all of the game’s assets up to this standard, including chapter 1.

You can vote for which you like most on this here patreon poll. It’s open to the public, too! Everyone can vote!

Development Update: November 11th, 2019

New Team Member Announcement

Say hello to our new writer/scripter, Pyxxis!

Pyxxis will be helping me with scene writing and some editing, but I’m going to train the poor bastard to make maps, scripts, and all the other things.

Pyxxis is an intern until we assess his technical capabilities. So here’s hoping he has the true grit necessary to start working on a game three years after it started development. Lesser men/women/in-between would pale at the challenge.

Programming Update

I’m almost done the credits sequence, but it’s not ready for a release today. I also fixed the sprites-don’t-appear-on-game-load bug and reorganized the entire repository and game directory.

There will likely be a new prototype for patrons next week including – if I have time – the new costume system.

Art Update – Feedback Requested

55_Doll_Combat

Now that chapter 5 is out and the art is complete, we’re trying to establish the game’s final style. This is pass #1 of a shaded, lined 55.

Already we’ve got some feedback on Discord that the shine is too high and we need bolder lines. Let us know what you think on the forums or the Discord.

Chicken has been getting us the miscellaneous art needed to fill out the chapter – and has already delivered Queen Bee Mei! Patrons get to see her today!

Koops is now working on the ending CGs for Doll Manor. They look great, and she also bombards me with pictures of her cute cats.

Urimas is getting me new icons for the game.

unknownAin’t Mei pretty?

Hund is getting us combat animations for all the elements not in the game yet. This week he got us the ice attack animation.

Mario and DrDissonance are up to date on their assignments. Mario will be working on the alraune story between his many, many shifts at his day job, in case you were wondering why it’s taking so damn long.

Odyssey of Gianna Update – Not So Good

OoG, our associated project, got hit by the patreon purity patrol, and has purged its direct art links and beta. You can still get the beta, but it cannot be advertised on patreon directly. You will need to join the OoG discord and speak to Vhiel.

Tell them I sent you, and have a paypal ready.

Fortunately, there is no hint that Pandemonium has run afoul of the forces of censorship.

Prototype 5-5b Released to Patrons!

Promotional Doll.png

Yep, as per usual, patrons can go download prototype 5-5b from the downloads page.

This prototype involved me renormalizing all the voice ticks so they all play at the same base volume and the engine changes their volume, instead of the files all being at varying decibel levels. Trust me, it was overdue.

Also, the images for the Doll Transformation were added. So even if you’ve seen the finale, go back and see it again because these images are superb.

There was also a bugfix or two thrown in, specifically the black-screen bug on the command deck of Cryogenics.

We also had a team meeting and will have an exciting announcement – next week. Not this week. Go play the prototype!

Prototype 5-5a Released to Patrons!

That’s Right, We Done It

Chapter 5 is now story-complete, and has been released to patrons. If you are already a patron, then the prototype can be acquired from the downloads page as usual.

If you are not a patron, you can become one – it only costs a buck! But if money is really tight for you (I know how that is) we also accept:
Heartfelt essays about why you love the game
Poems about the game, its contents, or just a love of our work
Photos of your adorable dogs, cats, and/or goats. Bonus for all three.
Basically we just want to know you love our work and will arrange free copies based on that.

If you are a new patron, a patreon post will go up shortly detailing where to find the downloads.

Okay so now what?

There are still a few things to go in chapter 5. Two new areas are getting added which simply didn’t get completed (The Manufactory, Lower Cryogenics), the Raibie TF sequence will get properly finished (it was rushed into an incomplete state due to my own illness), a post-chapter credits sequence will be available (Koops was too sick to finish it on time), and the Doll TF images were not complete (because Chickenwhite got sick this week).
Yeah we get sick sometimes. We’re human. For now.

The Doll TF images will probably be patched in next week, along with bugfixes.

Otherwise, please enjoy the conclusion of all the character arcs and the stupid stuff I wrote for this. There are tons of little stories in this section of the chapter, it’s very dense.

When does the public get at it?

As the patrons oh-so-generously voted, patron releases becoming public after one month. That means that prototype 5-5 becomes public on November 28th, 2019.

Development Update: Odyssey of Giana Cross-Promotion! Fan art! Other stuff, probably!

So this is the secret thing I mentioned earlier in the month.

1

That’s right, Team Starlight has a cross-promotion agreement with Vhiel, the developer of Odyssey of Gianna.

It’s a transformation-heavy H-RPG set in a mystical land where princess Liliana must go on a quest. She’ll probably get turned into a monkeygirl, but ostensibly she’s going to save the world.

Why this cross-promotion? Well, the beta launched exactly one week before Pandemonium’s next prototype, and I’m a fan of the project myself. So we not only cross-promoted it, but even tricked Chicken into doing fan art!

cross_promo_done_pink

This is Jyla, a rogue who can also turn into a bird – sort of. Trust me, it makes sense in context.

What’s that? You’re not immediately sold on this game? Well, Vhiel put out a demo a while back. You can get it right here.

If you like what you see, the Beta release came out a few hours ago. Anyone who has donated 10$ or more to Vhiel’s patreon gets the demo and a copy of the game when it is fully released. Pricing information is available in this post.

So if you like anything in the demo at all, go support the game damn you!

OoG also has a discord if you’re into that sort of thing.

Yes, I will be writing up a review once I’ve had a chance to go over it in detail. It will be every bit as brutal as the other Design with a Grain of Salt posts. It comes from a place of love I promise.

Will there be cameos in Pandemonium? I mean probably. It’s a big game. Anything could happen.

Other Update Stuff

I need 2-3 more images from Chickenwhite. The last prototype sent to the testers had only a couple bugs, and they’re fixed now. Except for Mario messing up the slime scene but that’s his fault.

We are presently on track for the release next Monday.

Patrons get a particularly spooky bonus stuff this week…
